How to Increase Your Metabolism by Increasing Your Daily Activity and Increasing Your Exercise

Changing Your Metabolic Rate

Your metabolism determines the efficiency of calorie burning. The word “calorie" here represents a unit of energy, not something fattening you eat. Simply put, a high metabolism means that you burn most of what you eat as energy. A low metabolism means that you store much of what you eat as fat or unused energy.

Fat is metabolized (used) in the mitochondria of muscle tissue. The more muscle tissue you have in your body, the more difficult it will be for you to ever gain weight or be fat. One reason men seem to lose weight faster than women is because genetically men have more muscle tissue in their bodies.

Muscle weighs about seven times more than fat by volume. However, it takes up significantly less space in your body than fat does. Muscle needs fat, it “eats" fat. A high percentage of lean muscle tissue in your body means that you are always burning fat. You will even burn fat while you sleep. If you want to “lose weight while you sleep" (as some fraudulent ads would have you believe) just exercise!

Since all physical activity uses energy and supports the formation of lean muscle tissue, one way to increase your metabolism is to increase your level of physical activity. This is a twofold process involving an increase in physical activity in general as well as in a specific exercise program.

Try these activities for a couple of weeks and see if you don't end up with a smaller body:

1. Put the remote control on the television and go to the television when you want to change the channel or adjust the volume.

2. Put away the garage door opener (if possible) and manually open the door when you want in or out.

3. Walk to the store when possible.

4. Hand wash dishes.

5. Don't wait until you have a “load" to take upstairs. Take one thing at a time.

6. Get a pedometer and take 10,000 steps a day. You may have to work your way up to that number!
