There are many types of jobs which require people to work on shifts. These days, it is becoming increasingly common for many different kinds of companies to expect their employees to work on such varied hours that it can take quite a toll on many areas of a person's life. One area which is affected by this factor is a person's normal sleep routine.
Most people are used to sleeping at regular intervals, as well as having approximately the same number of hours of sleep each time. When varied shifts and work hours disrupt this routine, it is usually not long before the person begins to feel the effects of this disruption.
What are some of the side effects?
1. You may become grouchy and argumentative
2. you may have difficulty concentrating
3. you may feel tired
4. suffer headaches
5. and even have a general sense of not feeling well.
All of these problems can be caused by consistent lack of sleep. It can take a toll on your health, as well as making you less effective on the job.
In addition, it can have other detrimental effects as well. Working rotating night shift disrupts your circadian rhythms and may have a wide range of physiologic, psychological, and social effects on shift workers. Also, shift work has been linked to higher risks cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancers. Shift work can further induce physical or mental stresses. Mental stress can lead to sleep disorders too.
Even if you do not have the option of choosing your own work hours, it is not necessary for you to have your life negatively affected by not getting the amount of sleep that you need. When you have just a little help in getting good, healthful sleep, you will soon see how quickly it will benefit you.
When you are able to fall asleep easily, this soothing atmosphere will greatly enhance the quality of your sleep. Instead of tossing restlessly, which often results in awakening with a tired feeling, you will feel refreshed and ready to start the new day.
Inconsistent rest due to shift work can lead to difficulty in falling asleep; eliminating this difficulty is the first - and most important - step you can take. It will improve your overall sense of well being, and make beginning the new work day something to look forward to. You will be pleased with how great you feel and how well you perform on the job after restful, refreshing sleep.
