Quitting Smoking by Going Cold Turkey

Visitors: 324

Studies have shown that up to 70% of smokers say that they want to give up smoking. One of the most popular ways is to go ‘cold turkey’. Here are some ways to increase your success with this method.

Going cold turkey is generally acknowledged as being the sudden stopping of smoking. Sometimes this is done with little forethought or preparation. It is one of the simplest methods to use and many have tried it. However the results are generally disappointing. This is because of the highly addictive nature of nicotine. It is as addictive as heroin or cocaine, which means that only the most strong-willed and determined will succeed by going cold turkey.

But there are some ways that you can increase your chances of success. The first is to be totally prepared. Write down the reasons that you are giving up and pin them some place that is prominent. You know that the cravings are going to be tough, but remind yourself of the reasons that you are giving up. Remember that the worst symptoms are in the first few days. The cravings will subside over time.

Break up your routine. If you always had a cigarette in the bar after work, choose to visit somewhere else. Try to divert your attention if you feel the need to light up. If you're at home you could call a friend or go out for a walk. Just do anything to take your mind of the desire to smoke.

It has been shown that using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can dramatically improve your chances of quitting compared to going cold turkey. These are available as patches, gum and nasal inhalers. NRT can help fight the cravings caused by the withdrawal of nicotine.
