As recently as 2002, the World Health Organization issued a detailed report about the dangers of smoking and quoted statistics confirming the health problems that could result from smoking. A report from an organization like this should have been sufficient to dissuade people, who had never smoked before, from ever starting, and persuade those who were compulsive smokers, to stop.
The World Health Organization reported that in that year, in developed countries, no less than 26% of the male population had died as a result of medical complications caused by excessive smoking. In so far as the United States popular was concerned, it reported that 43,8000 deaths that year had been due to smoking.
There is no question that cigarette smoking definitely affects people's health. Obviously, the more heavily a person smokes; the more serious are the consequences likely to be.

Faced with so many reports with regard to the health dangers of smoking, why do smokers disregard these indisputable facts and continue to indulge in a practice that can only result in harm to themselves and those around them?

Research has established that there is a special enzyme in the liver that is responsible for breaking down nicotine. The effectiveness of this enzyme varies in different people. Genetic influence plays a large part in determining whether or not there is a greater or lesser tendency towards nicotine dependence.
This may sound a very unfortunate situation for heavy smokers, who would like to quit smoking, but find it very difficult to do so because of certain inherent, physiological factors.
