South Beach Diet - How Does the South Beach Diet Work?

Are you looking to lose some excess pounds? Yes, then you may have heard about the ever so popular South Beach Diet. In fact you may even no someone that has tried the south beach diet. So what exactly is it and how does the South Beach Diet work?

The South Beach diet was created by the renowned cardiologist Dr Arthur Agatston and was designed not only to help you lose weight, but also improve your overall health as a result. It's focus is on teaching you about eating the right fats and carbohydrates, having said that it's not a no carbs or no fat diet, however there is a low carb phase with in the diet.

This diet works by asking you to stick to low GI foods, such as wholegrains (breads, pasta, oats). Low Glycemic Index (GI) foods release sugar in to the blood stream more steadily then the high GI foods, such as cakes, sugar, and white flour products.

There is also a strong emphasis on eating healthy fats and lots of protein, as the fats will help protect your heart and the protein will maintain and/or increase your metabolism, amongst other benefits.

So basically, you'll have more energy and feel fuller longer. There are three phases to this diet, and as afore mentioned the first one will work by training you mind and body to get off the sugary foods. This is done by maintaining a low carb period of your diet.

By undertaking this phase your body will no longer crave, the sugary and fatty foods, where by you'll enter the second and third phases in your diet where you will add the healthy carbs into the mix.

The south beach diet does work to a certain extent, however there are some negatives to this diet as well, such as some daily meal plans that average 1200 calories. This is certainly too low, and begs the question whether it would stop you from feeling hungry through out the day.
