Understand the risks and effects of fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is often taken together as myofascial pain syndrome. Fibromyalgia affects mostly the muscles, soft tissues, joints and tendons. There no confirmed tests or exact causes that defines fibromyalgia. Many fibromyalgia patients experience sleep disturbance, stress, pain in the joints and muscles, muscle stiffness, indigestion, feeling fatigue, feeling of knocked out after last night sleep in the morning, anxiety and depression etc. About more than 2 million people are affected by the ailment. According to the research the brains of both a healthy person and a fibromyalgia patient was studied and it was discovered that the functioning of both had wide differences. The function of the fibromyalgia patient was unclear and its cause is still unknown, but some have estimated the cause to be child hood or prolonged stress. Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal disease which can be treated but cannot be permanently cured. It causes disability of the muscles and chronic pain.

This condition can be treated with pain medications, exercise etc. it is associated with systemic lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. 80% of women are affected with this ailment. After having several sufficient hours of sleep the person after waking up feels muscle pain and looks as if he had a work out. Fibromyalgia also causes a emotional and mental disturbances such as forgetfulness, aggressiveness, irritability, depression, anxiety, mood swings, migraine, tension headaches, numbness and tingling in the body. The signs and symptoms may differ from patient to patient. It affects the tender points or the pressure points of the tender muscles such as the shoulder, neck, hips and knees. It causes cognitive impairment because it affects the central nervous system. The main symptoms of fibromyalgia are tingling, pinching and twitching sensation on the muscle, fatigue, restless pain syndrome, nerve pain, muscle pain, chronic sleep disturbances, problems in conducting the daily routine, the pain in the muscles does not subside in spite of enough sleep. The main areas affected are the shoulder, neck, lower back and the hips. The main cause is still unknown but it affects people between the age group of 20-50 years. Also it affects teenagers that cause intense fatigue. Family history plays a main role in causing fibromyalgia.

There are higher chances of fibromyalgia running into families. Stress is also considered to be causing fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome. Long working hours, incorrect sitting postures triggers the condition the most. It is associated with post traumatic stress disorder, depression. Treatment for fibromyalgia: The symptoms of fibromyalgia differ from person to person. A combination of stress education, patient education, exercises and medication helps to treat this ailment. These options are not a permanent cure but they give relief from the pain of muscles and joints. Stress management is effective by way of counseling, family and friends support, relaxation tips etc can reduce fibromyalgia. Exercises such as cycling, yoga, walking, and swimming helps to remain fit and induce sleep. There is no specific diet suggested for fibromyalgia patients but it is important that they have to avoid alcohol and caffeine consumption before going to bed.
