Are you suffering from stomach ulcer? Blame it on hydrochloric acid, an acid present in the digestive juices of the stomach. It destroys the gastric or intestinal mucosal lining of the stomach. If the gastric mucosal lining are damaged or have become weak, it may too cause stomach ulcer. However, there are other reasons also behind the menace of stomach ulcer. Persistent use of aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medicines may also cause stomach ulcer. Did I tell you that if you do not quit smoking, you may be the next victim of stomach ulcer? And the treatment that you may take will also not be very effective.

For the people with H. pylori, the stomach ulcer can be cured in one week of treatment. Other people may require taking an acid-reducing medicine for 2 to 4 weeks. For the people with H. pylori negative, an acid-reducing medicine has to be taken for 4 to 8 weeks. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), like omeprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, and lansoprazole are regularly used acid-reducing medicines. H2 antagonists, like famotidine, cimetidine, ranitidine, and nizatidine are medicines which were used earlier.

Sometimes, surgery is suggested if the medicines are not responding well to control the stomach ulcer. It may involve any of the three processes, vagatomy, pyloroplasty, and antrectomy. In vegatomy, the vegus nerve is cut to de-link the stomach and the brain. Pyloroplasty makes the opening into the duodenum and small intestine larger. It allows the materials of the stomach to move around more freely. In antrectomy, the lower part of the stomach is removed, which facilitates the secretion of hormones necessary to produce digestive juice.

Profuse bleeding from the ulcer may require immediate medical attention. Cauterization could be resorted to in such cases. It is a surgical method by which bleeding is stopped. It is done by using heat, which seals any open blood vessels around the ulcer. This may be done during an endoscopy also. Even medicines may be given through injections into the peptic ulcer to stop bleeding.
