What is Fibromyalgia? Learn About This Common Condition

What is fibromyalgia syndrome? The condition is characterized by extreme pain that at specific tender points and all throughout the body. Although it is difficult to diagnose, there are several things that the doctors look for when examining a patient.

A person experiencing symptoms of fibromyalgia report that the main discomfort is pain all over their body. The muscles, tendons and ligaments feel fatigued and strained, the feeling is often compared to overworked and stiff muscles.

Also, there are specific tender points throughout the body that are extremely sensitive and painful, even more so than the rest of their body. These painful locations are known as “fibromyalgia trigger points"- and they tend to occur in the same places: they cluster around the shoulders, neck, chest, elbow, hip, and knee areas

The fibromyalgia trigger points are so sensitive that even the smallest amount of pressure will cause the patient excruciating pain. A simple brush or tap of the hand is very uncomfortable because it causes so much pain.

The intensity of the symptoms of fibromyalgia range depending on the person and circumstance. Certain environmental situations may intensify the pain, as well as the overall health of the person experiencing the symptoms. The intensity ranges from mild to extreme depending on many factors.

If you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome, do not despair because there are many things that can be done to treat this condition. Although there is no specific cure that has been found, there are many things that you can do to lessen the pain. It is important that you take some time to learn about the condition, as well as preventative steps that you can take to improve your daily situation.
