Firstly, panic attacks (and anxiety) are a behavioral illness rather than a mental illness. So medication at this time is not the best treatment by far - in fact it is simply not the answer. The only reason any doctor might prescribe medication for panic attacks is unfortunately because they do not know any alternative - they literally are clueless about what to do to help you. No one I have ever spoken to, or heard from, who has suffered panic attacks, has EVER been cured by taking medication.

These are used to control your physical symptoms, in particular rapid heartbeats, trembling, shaking, and blushing. Compared to other medications, Beta blockers have less side effects. The side effects include: light-headedness, short-term memory loss, drowsiness, insomnia, diarrhea, depression and nightmares.
This is used for severe depression, and sometimes obsessional disorders and panic attacks. The side effects are not pleasant at all. They include: urinating, constipation, postural hypotension, loss of sex drive, erectile failure, weight gain, tachycardia, blurred vision, sweating, and irritation.
In short, this particular medication actually states that it may cause. . . anxiety! They are said to be effective in reducing panic attack symptoms in a majority of cases, but real world usage gives a different story. The side effect include: slurred speech, drowsiness, less mental clarity, agitation, low moods, *** problems and clumsiness.
There are some others, but suffice to say that medication for panic attacks is not the route to a complete cure. They serve only to reduce the symptoms at best.
