Patients of Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) face many difficult problems in an attempt to bring their life to normal as they find controlling their obsessions and compulsions very difficult. There are instances that when one tries to come out of the anxiety of obsessions and compulsions simply by stopping them, their condition becomes more adverse and they come into a situation of greater stress. That is why many researchers believe that it should be controlled slowly. OCD is an extremely serious condition, it is a type of anxiety disorder that requires immediate professional help.

There are still researches going on to study the possible causes of OCD. Although experts have not been able to locate or tell the exact cause of this distressing mental disorder, one of the possible causes is said to be that a chemical in the brain called Serotonin, is low in people with OCD, which forces them to do certain actions over and over again. The medications that are used to treat OCD are basically the ones which help in the production of serotonin in the brain.

There are two ways we can cure obsessive-compulsive disorder. One is through medication, the other is through Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), which is the preferred and recommended choice.

CBT is a type of therapy, the theme of which is behavior modification. This treatment or therapy helps the patient to neglect the obsessions and compulsions. Behavior therapy is time consuming and requires great commitment from the patient but the affects of this therapy are in most cases long lasting and of course free of side effects.

There is no specific way of doing behavior therapy. Each behavior therapy is different for each patient depending on his or her compulsions and obsessions. The patient needs to pay visits to the doctor regularly.

Those who do not believe in medication claim that drugs causes no significant affect on the patient. Drugs are addictive in some cases and not a long-term solution. That is why patients who suffer from OCD should be treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which has been proven to cure OCD.
