I can't believe it! My boyfriend/girlfriend just developed OCD!

If you are with someone for a while and then they suddenly start acting strange and they start to perform rituals you know that they have developed OCD.

What can you do about this. This is a good thing because of the fact that you were there and you could see what kind of circumstances were and are going on in their lives. This information will be good because it will show you what things really aggravate and contribute to the OCD behavior.

Support that person and coach them through it. Tell them that performing the rituals will only make it worse. It's like a rash that they'll want to scratch, but if they scratch it, it will just get worse. If they leave it alone, the OCD will go away.

Don't get mad at them, rather be understanding but firm. Let them know that you will help by talking about it, but you will not perform any rituals for them and you will not enable them to do any rituals. Just tell them that an OCD expert to you that you should not enable them.

Now if you're in the situation where the person has had it for a while, just do what I just wrote above. There really is no huge difference except for the fact that you've probably set up a better communication system than the couple above.

Take action: It's important to know that just because your other half has OCD that they'll always be that way. Nothing can be further from the truth! Just be patient and don't enable the other person, just be there for them to talk too.
