Strep throat is an infection caused by a type of bacteria called Streptococcus (often referred to as Group A streptococci or “GAS” for short). Strep throat is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 15, although it can happen in younger children and adults. It is most common in the late fall, winter, and early spring. Strep throat is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 15, but it affects people of all ages. Strep throat is a contagious disease (meaning that you catch it from another person). It can be spread when healthy people come into contact with people who have it. It is no fun, but after feeling sick for 2 or 3 days, most kids start feeling better Strep throat is diagnosed with a physical examination, medical history, and a rapid strep test which is in the form of a throat culture which can be taken in the doctor’s office. The good news is that strep throat is only responsible for about 10% to 15% of sore throats. What's important and different about strep throat is that if it isn't treated it can sometimes result in rheumatic fever, which can damage the valves of the heart.

Treatment prevents serious complications associated with streptococcal infections. Treatment of strep throat, which includes antibiotics, is the same for both younger and older children. Although strep throat typically resolves on its own within two to five days, treatment is given for a number of reasons. Treatment failure may result from a number of factors including failure to follow the treatment plan or sore throat due to another cause. Typical treatment includes anti-inflammatory medications and cortisone by mouth or injection and sometimes antibiotics, usually in the from of penicillin for 24 hours significantly reduces the ability to spread the disease. Treatment for strep throat is very easy, it can be done with the help of medication or it can be treated with natural methods, depending on what the patient chooses. If you act in time and get treatment quickly, then this decreases the period of communicability to other individuals and prevents other complications. Some studies show a better response to antibiotics if treatment with penicillin is delayed until at least 48 hours after symptoms begin. Although a penicillin shot given once was long the standard of treatment for strep throat, it is mostly used now in children with strep and persistent vomiting, so that they are unable to keep down an oral antibiotic. It is important that the infected person take the antibiotic for the full course of treatment to avoid complications.

Natural remedies

In you have problems with antibiotics, you may want to try a few natural home remedies which can be very effective in getting rid of a strep throat. Green tea is great , so is Chamomile tea. You can mix in some honey as this will soothe the throat. Some people try gargling with salt – sounds horrible and nasty but I have found that it does help. Also avoiding anything that will irritate your throat is also helpful such as very hot or very cold drinks. Lots of liquid food such as soups and yogurts will also help you to soothe the pain away.
