Visitors: 377

Pilates is a popular exercise method that was recently developed, just in the 20th century. At present, millions of people from all over the world practice this not-so-stressful form of exercise. If you want to try it out, make sure to wear the right Pilates outfit to match your exercise regime.

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates during the end of World War I initially as a rehabilitation program for war veterans. The philosophy behind Pilates is to promote overall physical and mental health through concise movements of the body. This form of exercise involves controlling body movements, enhancing strength and muscle build. In line with this, Joseph developed the “Pilates Principles" for aligning, centering, and controlling the entire body.

The principles behind Pilates are the following:

Mind over matter - As mentioned, the aim of Pilates is to promote overall mind and body health through fusion. The series of exercises involved in Pilates is centered on grace and balance.

Breathing - Pilates helps promote regular blood circulation to “awaken" the cells and to make the blood do its work properly. As such, each exercise is accompanied by breathing instructions to help you learn to breathe correctly.

Centering - This focuses on the “powerhouse, " consisting of the hips, abdomen, buttocks, and lower back. All Pilates exercises begin in the powerhouse area and moves to different parts of the body.

Concentration and control - Pilates demands intense concentration on your part to control your movement and balance.
