What is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism is a condition of the thyroid gland. Thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front section of your neck. It produces two important hormones tetraiodothyronine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) that control the way our body cells use energy. These hormones regulate metabolism.

Hyperthyroidism is a disease that occurs when the thyroid gland makes too much of T4, T3, or both hormones.

Causes of Hyperthyroidism

There are a variety of causes for hyperthyroidism. Graves’ disease, which is an autoimmune disorder, is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. It stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete too much of hormones.

Graves’ disease occurs more often in women than in men. It often runs in families and has a genetic link.

Other causes of hyperthyroidism are:

  • excess consumption of iodine
  • inflammation of the thyroid called thyroiditis
  • tumors of the thyroid or pituitary gland
  • excess amounts of tetraiodothyronine consumed through dietary supplements or as medicines
  • nodular goiter, which is a lump in thyroid gland that may cause the thyroid to produce excessive amounts of thyroid hormones

Home Remedies for Hyperthyroidism

There are certain ways to treat and/or manage hyperthyroidism naturally. Here are the best ways to treat hyperthyroidism naturally and at home.

Foods for Hyperthyroidism

Vegetable juices: Fresh vegetable juices from nutrient-rich vegetables such as kale and spinach can help provide essential nutrients.

Whole foods: Processed foods should be avoided. Consume fresh fruits, whole grains, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Certain herbs: there are certain herbs that work as anti-inflammatory foods such as basil and oregano. These should be taken by the person suffering with the disease.

Ginger: It is an anti-inflammatory herb that can boost your immune function.

Bugleweed: The herb bugleweed is also known as Lycopusvirginica. It can help manage low to mild symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It helps reduce the amount of hormone that is produced by the thyroid.

Studies have found that it helps decrease TSH levels and impairs thyroid hormone production by the gland.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: You can increase the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet by taking more of fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts etc. These essential fatty acids are the building blocks for hormones and control immune function and cell growth. They help improve the function of thyroid glands.

Broccoli: Anyone suffering with hyperthyroidism must consume uncooked broccoli as much as possible.

Motherwort: The herb has anti-thyroid activity properties, which makes it beneficial for those suffering from hyperthyroidism.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis): It can help regulate an overactive thyroid by reducing TSH levels. It contains flavonoids, phenolic acids that are useful in regulating the thyroid.

Foods to avoid in Hyperthyroidism

Certain foods that may cause trouble in hyperthyroidism should be avoided. These foods may stimulate the thyroid activity. A few examples of these foods are:

  • caffeine
  • alcohol
  • soy
  • corn
  • gluten-based products
  • conventional Dairy packaged and processed foods
  • sugar
  • artificial favoring agents

Get Proper Sleep

This is an important factor which contributes to the glands becoming weak. Inadequate and improper sleep can affect your adrenal activities which is not good for hyperthyroidism. You should ensure to take sound sufficient sleep to keep the body and mind relaxed and refreshed.

Regular Exercise

Regularly exercising can be very helpful in hyperthyroidism. It maintains blood circulation and ensures good cardiac and adrenal activity. You should contact a doctor and seek guidance about which exercises can be good for better results for you.
