Recommended Tips on Diet for Cancer Patients to Follow

Experts believe that following a balanced diet for cancer can form an important part of cancer therapy. A proper and balanced diet and appropriate nutrition give the body a good chance to win against cancer. Here are some helpful ideas that you can use immediately in your fight to rid yourself of cancer.

Fruits and Vegetables

Mom was always right in this case. No one doubts that eating plenty of vegetables and fruits will provide your body valuable and useful nutrients for getting rid of cancerous cells.

This group of foods are just loaded with minerals, vitamins and carbohydrates. Raw vegetables are probably the best, generally speaking, because all the practical chemicals are kept intact for your body to absorb and use.

Fruits such as citrus fruits and lemon contain anti-cancer substances that have been shown in research studies to kill cancer cells. As well, fruits and vegetables are rich in anti-oxidants, substances that can remove cell-damaging oxygen free radicals that may cause cells to become cancerous by damaging them.

Dairy and Proteins

A diet high in proteins such as fish, lean meats, chicken and beans is beneficial for cancer patients. The reason is because they are needed to keep the bone strong and for tissue repair. It is also required for the promotion of growth and skin repair.

This is especially true when individual with cancer is going through radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Conventional cancer therapy will damage the good cells in the body. This cannot be avoided with conventional therapy.

When selecting dairy products, go for the low-fat version. Consider eating more of low-fat yogurt, milk and cheese rather than those with normal fat contents. Some people suggest hard cheese such as Swiss or cheddar instead of soft cheese.

Grain Foods

When deciding which type of grains, always choose whole grains. This food group is a good source of carbohydrates for those with cancer. Carbohydrates are required by the body for energy production. Examples of grains are pasta, rice, breads and cereals.

Avoid refined products when possible. Always check the box to make sure that you pick more of whole grains rather than refined grains. For example, choose more of whole grain breads rather than white breads.

Pure Water. Pure and Simple

While there is no scientific evidence to show that getting enough water would be beneficial for cancer, it is a good idea to do so nevertheless. Lack of water puts the body under stress and does not allow many organ systems to work properly.

As well, it does not allow toxins to be efficiently removed from your body. Experts have always recommended drinking at least 8 cups of water each and every day. If you find water tasteless, add some lemon juice in it. There's some evidence that citrus fruits like oranges and lemon may be useful in cancer treatment and prevention. If not, just drink fruit juices, the ones with no added sugars.

Bottom Line

Research studies have revealed that a balanced diet high in vegetables and fruits seems to reduce the chances of certain types of cancer. While there are no studies to clearly show that sticking to a healthy diet could cure cancer, it does make common sense.

This will give the body the best chance of fighting off existing cancer cells and give the patients the energy necessary to make it through these difficult times.
