Visitors: 131

A cosmetologist is a beauty specialist who specializes in providing beauty treatments. A cosmetologist is trained in all forms of beauty care and can give hair treatments, facials, skin treatments, and nail treatments. A person who is licensed in cosmetology is called a cosmetologist. Cosmetology is the treatment of skin, hair and nails and including manicures, pedicures, application of artificial nails, special occasion hairstyling, shampooing hair, cosmetic application, body hair removal, chemical hair relaters or coloring and highlighting of hair, and hair extensions or wig treatments. A cosmetologist is able to cut and style all types of hair, as well as straighten, permanent wave, and color it. Many are also knowledgeable in the field of esthetics, which focuses exclusively on skin care management.

Cosmetologists provide beauty services and they may have other duties such as answering the telephone or making appointments. They often recommend and sell a variety of cosmetic products, order supplies, and keep records. Many cosmetologists are expert in hair cutting. They cut, shampoo, condition, style, color, permanent wave, or straighten it. They use a variety of chemical solutions and equipment such as scissors, clippers, curlers, straightening irons, and dryers to give their customers fashionable hairstyles. They are expected to maintain clean work areas.

Cosmetologists work on improving the appearances of others so they need pleasant surroundings with good lighting and ventilation. Those who have studied cosmetology not only perform the services on clients but develop their creativity. A student must have graduated from a state-licensed cosmetology school and pass a cosmetology board exam in his or her state.

If the students choose to pursue a cosmetology program, they must possess communication skills, and will learn public and personal health and hygiene, laboratory work, and handling of chemicals. However, most cosmetologists get certified in their particular field of interest. SWS offers a number cosmetology courses that graduate successful cosmetologists. There are separate licensing exams for manicurists, pedicurists, and skin care specialists. Many cosmetologists also choose careers in the beauty industry as a beauty consultant, while others become sales or marketing specialists in the cosmetics industry. A cosmetologist can increase his or her earnings by providing therapeutic treatments and massages, and advising a client regarding beauty treatments and products.
