Cherries are probably one of the things to eat, when you suffer from gout. Whether you prefer sweet cherries or sour cherries, they are both very beneficial.

There have been studies, going back as far as 1950, which show that gout sufferers who eat 8 ounces of cherries or drink the equivalent amount of juice can prevent a gout attack.

Sweet cherries are high and natural fiber and low in calories. They contain melatonin, which has analgesic and sedative-like effects. This can help to ease recurring pain. Sweet cherries are also high in antioxidants, which can help to reduce nitric oxide and other gout-related chemicals in the body. Cherry juice and cherry supplement capsules can be consumed, as well.

Other foods that are low in purines include: coffee and tea, low fiber breads and cereals, cream soups made with low fat milk, low fat cheese, skim milk, nuts and peanut butter, pasta and soups without any type of meat extracts. These foods can be eaten without moderation.

Although not a food, water is very beneficial to drink when fighting a gout attack. It helps to flush uric acid out of the blood steam, which prevents its crystallization around the joints. It has been suggested that those experiencing gout symptoms should drink 8-12 glasses of water per day.
