There is nothing more troubling than seeing your kid suffering from an allergy and therefore identifying a good pediatric allergist is essential for your child’s wellbeing. More than 50 million people, including kids in America suffer from one or the other type of allergies. Be it peanuts, dust, bugs or cats, allergies can be triggered by anything. According to a research, kids miss almost 2 million days at school every year because of allergy disorders.

What is an Allergy?

Allergy is not a disease. It is actually an overreaction of your immune system to a specific substance, which might be harmless to general people. But if you are allergic to a particular substance, your body will consider it as an invader or an allergen and will attack it with a serious of symptoms that might even be life threatening. Allergies can be hereditary and can affect kids from a very young age. An allergic reaction can affect your kid’s eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin or GI tract. Allergies can be to a specific food, smell, dust, pollen or even a season. This means each time your child will come in contact with the specific allergen, his or her body will develop the allergic reaction. Some of the common symptoms of allergy include wheezing, hoarseness, coughing, tightness in throat, breathing trouble, stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea, itchy and watery eyes, hives, skin spots and swelling.

When to Seek Help of an Allergist

If you feel your kid is allergic to a particular product or suffers from cold-like symptoms at a specific time each year, then in all probability it will be a good idea to consult an allergist. An allergist is also called an immunologist and is a specialist doctor trained in identifying and treating people with asthma, allergies and immune disorders. If your allergist thinks that your child might be suffering from an allergy, he will do a skin test to identify the allergen. There are two possible ways to perform this diagnostic test. Either, a drop of a liquid and purified form of suspected allergy causing substance is put on the skin and the portion pricked with a small needle or a minute amount of the same allergen is directly injected under the skin. The skin will react in nearly 15 minutes and if you see a reddish area or lump in the tested portion, then it means that the child is positively allergic to that substance.

Treating Allergies

Though, there is no cure for allergies, but a good allergist will be able to relieve all the symptoms and tell you ways to minimize your exposure to that specific allergen. In some cases, the doctor might even recommend immunotherapy or allergy shots to help desensitize the body to the allergy causing substance.

So, keep the above things in mind and pick a qualified and reputed pediatric allergist in Springfield to prevent and protect your kids from all sorts of allergies.
