Associate Professor Neil Mann and his team from Australia's RMIT University's School of Applied Sciences and Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Dermatology, conducted a two year study to determine if and how diet affects acne.
The research team discovered there is a solid link between the levels of glucose and insulin in your body, and the condition of your skin.
Eating foods with a high glycemic index, like sugar and refined carbohydrates, causes a surge in glucose and insulin levels. This insulin spike can lead to new acne breakouts or make the existing acne even worse.
On the other hand, eating foods with a low glycemic index, like whole grains and legumes, can help clear acne breakouts.
The Australian research team observed 2 groups of males ages 15 to 25. Over the course of 12 weeks, one group followed a typical teenage diet which included sugary drinks, processed snacks, white bread, etc. The other group was on a low glycemic diet consisting of whole grains, legumes, and high protein food.
After 12 weeks, the group who the followed the healthier, low glycemic diet, showed a 50% reduction in their acne.
So what does this mean to you, if you suffer from acne? A change in diet can help you clear your acne. If you are interested in a low glycemic diet, think of what you are eating right now and look it up in a glycemic index table. Find which foods have the highest glycemic index and replace them with foods that have a low glycemic index. You'll be surprised how many delicious choices you have.
