If you suffer from hyperhidrosis, all is not lost. There are many treatments available to you. Discover them in this article.

Definition

What kind of treatments you can use depend largely on what type of hyperhidrosis you have. You should classify your hyperhidrosis as one or a combination of the following: plantar (feet), palmar (hands), truncal (chest, back, thighs, groin), cranio-facial (face, scalp, neck) or axillary (underarms).

Antiperspirants

Probably you have already tried over the counter antiperspirants which are designed only for the underarms. If you speak to your doctor about your hyperhidrosis then one of the first things he will suggest is to try a prescription topical antiperspirant.

This is a product that can be used anywhere on the skin and not just the armpits. Plus it is so strong that you don't have to use it every day.

Although this works very well, some people do report side effects such as a burning sensation.

Iontophoresis

This treatment can be used for plantar, palmar or axillary hyperhidrosis.

You dip the part of the body that has the excessive sweat problem into a tray of water which is then electrified with a very low current. It doesn't hurt but a few sessions can mean no more sweat for at least a week. No one knows the full reason that it works but it seems to block the sweat ducts.

Botox

This method is only really used for the underarms. Botox is actually a brand name for an extract of botulinum toxin.

For the underarms you are looking at about 12 injections under each arm and this will keep sweat away for maybe 3 months. It is also sometimes performed on the hands but rarely anywhere else.

Surgery

Surgery must be considered an absolute last resort treatment for hyperhidrosis after all others have failed. One type of surgery is called liposuction and involves insertion of a canula and scraping the sweat glands away.

Another is called ETS and much more controversial. It involves severing the nerves and can have severe side effects.
