Programming YOU to Match Your Lifespan

Our lives are becoming ever more challenging as we seek to juggle increasing everyday demands.

Excessive stress quickly leads to burnout. Our good intentions then - for work- life balance, health, fitness, nutrition, exercise, personal wellbeing etc - all suffer as a consequence.

Yet health is the first wealth. Keeping yourself informed with regards to constructive lifestyle choices is essential in nurturing and maintaining an optimal frame of mind and body.

"It is easier to maintain good health through proper exercise, good diet, and emotional balance than to regain it once it is lost. " Kenneth Cooper - “Father of Aerobics"

There is nothing quite like that feeling of being healthy - that feeling of energy, vitality, self-esteem, self-belief - the difference it makes to every aspect of your world and your personal prosperity.

So if you know it makes sense to adopt a healthy living style of life, what do you do when the world conspires against you?

As an experienced fitness professional with almost 20yr in the fitness Industry, with both a Masters and Bachelors degree, as well as international work experience in 8 different countries, my view has evolved over time.

It starts with having the ability to see the “big picture" of your life. You come to realise it's as much about putting together a lifelong plan for wellness (and sustainable success) and not just about physical fitness (those 6-pack abs!)

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. " Thomas Edison - Visionary Inventor

Nowadays, the three main professional currencies are Money, Energy and Time (MET)

You can get one, maybe two, but all three are tough!

You see the term MET displayed on numerous exercise machines.

A MET is a unit of energy and refers to the amount of calories expended at rest (sitting idly). Now running, cycling, cross-trainers all produce different physiological responses in terms of muscle mass employed, HR response etc. But the concept of a MET allows us to compare the relative work done (energy expended) through each activity, in terms of METs.

So using this analogy, a MET is an expression of power (energy) and can also represent how great you currently feel about your lifestyle.

By having more money, energy and time, you have more power (you show up more) in today's world.

Further I use the “s" to represent success (METs) as you can have all 3 (money, energy, time), but your own personal definition of success may not reflect your current reality.

So once you grasp the concept of a MET and of consciously striving to raise your personal METs . . .

Can you see how you get your needs better MET?

Start by viewing exercise as much about restoring “energy" as expending it.

Fit should mean “fit for a purpose" e. g. fit to match your lifestyle / lifespan, not that dreaded monotomous gymtime

Because a Healthy Body leads to a Healthy Mind which leads to a Healthy Future.

Exercise is better viewed as a vehicle that maximises your energy levels, helps you pack more into less time, and overall enhances your productivity levels which in turn encourages your ability to earn more money.

It's a subtle shift, but instead of thinking “I must lose weight" or “I must do 20 min cardio", reframe your thinking with how you can raise your METs by consistently comitting to a regular and frequent exercise programme.

Because when your METs are high, your lifespan will be long and memorable!
