If you suffer from shrimp allergy than you suffer from what is known as a contact allergy. In fact if you are allergic to any sort of seafood you are in the same boat (unintentional pun). Seafood allergies are known as type 1 allergies. In this article we'll look be looking at shrimp allergy and foods that will also give you an allergic reaction if you have a shrimp allergy.

The problem with seafood allergies is that they gradually get more severe over time, if you are someone who is at risk of becoming allergic to seafood, your chance of developing allergy symptoms will increase as your exposure to the allergens in the seafood increases. If you do develop an allergy to seafood, i. e. shrimp the allergy usually stays with you for life.

The important point about seafood allergies is that they are usually limited to one group. For example shrimp is a crustacean and if you have a shrimp allergy you will need to avoid other crustaceans as they are in the same group and are likely to trigger an allergic reaction if consumed.

There are three main groups you need to be aware of, these are gastropods vertebrates, crustaceans Shellfish and cephalopods. A break down of each group follows:

Gastropods: slugs, snails, sea slugs.
Vertebrates (fish with a back bone): salmon, tuna, herring cod.
Crustaceans: Shrimp, lobster, prawns, crab.
Shellfish: muscles, clams , oysters, shellfish, scallops.
Cephalopods: squid, octopus, calamari, cuttlefish.
If you have a shrimp allergy the chance you are allergic to other crustaceans in the group is between 50% and 75%. This is the same for the other four groups. However this does not hold true for two different groups. For example, if you are allergic to shellfish it does not mean that you will have an allergic reaction to gastropods.

So what are the symptoms of seafood allergies, these include breathing difficulties, ringing in ears, dizziness, head ache, light headedness, a rise or fall in blood pressure and nausea amongst other symptoms.

Whenever something in a new group is tried for the first time you should only eat a small amount and then see if any of the symptoms occur within several hours. Symptom include hives or rash, difficulties in breathing, headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears and an increase or decrease in blood pressure.

If you suffer from seafood allergies, the best form of treatment is usually to avoid seafood full stop. That way there is no chance of you getting an allergic reaction.

If you suspect that you may be allergic to a specific type of seafood and you are trying it for the first time, it is a very good idea to test it. You can do this by eating a small sample of the seafood and waiting for several hours to see if an allergic reaction occurs. If one doesn't occur than you are probably not allergic to it, however if one does occur it means you are allergic to this seafood and you should avoid it. In this article we looked at the foods that you should avoid if you have a shrimp allergy, as well as groups of seafood that are likely to give you and allergy of one of them does.
