The supplement Omega 3 is most commonly found in fish oils. These oils are extracted from the body tissues of fatty fish. Oils that come from the livers of most fish are not as good for you because they have lower levels of Omega 3’s and the risk of being contaminated. Omega 3 can also be found in plants, seeds, nuts, and in limited types of meats.

Omega 3 fish oil supplements consist of three Essential Fatty Acids - EFA’s. They are DHA’s - docosahexaenoic acids, important for brain and retinal health. EPA’s - eicosapentaenoic acid and ALA’s - Alpha-linolenic acids help to support the proper functioning of cell membranes. The reason they are called essential is that the body cannot make it on its own so it must come from food sources. They can be found in plants, fish, and grass fed beef.

Our purpose here is to discuss specifically the fish sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. As you might guess, there are both good and bad food sources. The reason the sources may be termed as “bad” is because they may not have high enough levels of Omega 3 and/or they may be at higher risk for contaminants.

The two best sources of Omega 3 fish oils are Antarctic Krill also rich in antioxidants and phospholipids. These Krill swim in icy cold seawater far away from any type of industry. They are relatively free of contaminants because the water is so cold. The second best source of Omega 3 is the Hoki fish native to New Zealand. They swim in near pristine, cold, fresh water.

Wild Salmon, Rainbow Trout, and Tuna (canned/frozen) are also sources of Omega 3’s. Other fish sources are Anchovies, Sardines, Oysters, Shrimp and Scallops. Whiting, King Crab are also good fish sources of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Fish high in Omega 3 have been effective in supporting eye health and brain functioning. They help with memory, learning, and may relieve some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Old sayings die hard and fish has long since been touted as “brain food. ” Cod live oil was used to treat whatever was ailing you whether it be a cold, the flu, or stomach problems. I know of not one individual who could swallow that stuff and like it. Fish oil supplements are now available in gelatinous capsules, liquid form, and powder form.
