In this article I will tell you about some of the basics of the low carb Atkins diet which will help you determine your level of calorie consumption.
The premise behind the low carb Atkins diet is simple: it assumes that if you take a low carb diet (containing no more than twenty grams of carbohydrates per day), your body will start burning the fat deposits collected inside your body. During the 14-day induction period, your carb intake should not exceed twenty grams. Once you are past the induction period, you will need to gradually increase your carbohydrate intake to twenty-five grams; then after one week you can increase it to thirty grams, and so on. One thing that you should keep a watch on is: are you really losing any weight? How much weight are you losing per day? This is important in order to determine whether the low carb Atkins diet is doing you any good or not. Once you significantly lose your weight, your next phase will be the pre-maintenance and maintenance periods where low carb diets will gradually become part of your lifestyle.
What are the low carb foods? Foods such as meats, poultry, fish, leafy green vegetables, eggs and butter which contain a low amount of carbohydrates are called low carb foods. Needless to say, these foods fit perfectly within the framework set by the low carb Atkins diet plan. One thing you should note is that the low carb Atkins diet plan asks you to reduce ‘net carb intake', not just carb intake as a whole. Therefore, if you find foods that are rich in carbohydrates as well as fiber, don't be afraid to include these foods in your diet as well. Do keep in mind that there are some unscrupulous companies who promote their products as being low in carbs but actually they contain a high amount of carbs. Your best is to always check the food packages for the level of nutrition it provides and the amount of carbohydrates it contains.
