Persistent Acne Care

Persistent acne is a skin condition which is more common in women than in men. The acne may be in the form of pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, or milia. These tend to develop as the result of an oily skin condition. Acne problems usually develop during the teenage years and fade away as people grow older. But in some cases, it may continue up to forty years or more. In some other rare cases, they persist even beyond this age.

In few cases, women may experience acne during their weddings or any other events due to their anxiety and stress. In some cases, acne appears in some women during menopause. These instances are mainly due to hormonal changes. These generally are not considered persistent acne, though the treatments may be similar.

People with persistent acne should be careful to use only mild lotions and soaps, as well as antibacterial cleaning products. It is very easy to dry out the skin using harsh soaps, but there are many on the market for acne-prone skin that would be good choices. It is important to remember to not scrub the face too hard, as that could upset the delicate, inflamed skin even more. Moisturizers and other solutions for retaining the natural moisture of the skin may be applied to rectify excessive dryness of skin. People with persistent acne are more prone to sunburns, as well, so, one must take necessary precautions like using sunscreen lotions, and wide brimmed hats before going out in the sun.

Hormones are the main cause of persistent acne. A dermatologist who specializes in hormone imbalances should be consulted in case of persistent acne. The hormone level of the patient is measured to determine any specific hormone causing acne. Though the method of treatment varies from patient to patient, the purpose is to lower the level of testosterone. Oral medicines or injections are prescribed for reducing testosterone, which in turn results in reducing the severity of persistent acne problem. Special needles are used by dermatologists to clear blackheads, whiteheads, and milia. These needles are available in various sizes and the usage depends on the size of the acne.
