Acne and Water

Water is our most precious compound. About 70 percent of the earth is covered in water. Roughly the same percent of our bodies is water. So, how does water play into acne?

If you don't understand why you have acne, please read our Understanding Acne section.

Because acne is affected by your general health, if you aren't drinking enough, water can improve an acne condition by increasing your overall health. Body processes work much more efficiently when you are well hydrated.

Specifically, water improves acne by:

creating a medium for the kidneys to flush out waste and toxins

supporting the circulation of nutrients throughout the body

supporting regular bowel movements to carry wastes out of the body

supporting the organs: Kidneys: removes wastes and toxins from the bloodstream that could end up being excreted by the skin. Kidneys functioning optimally helps prevent work for the liver.

Liver: Many functions including: cleans waste and toxins, controls nutrients, removes excess hormones

Skin: water keeps the skin hydrated, supple, and healthy.

allowing the body (and skin) to rebuild, repair, and heal itself

preventing water retention which can contribute to acne

So, how do you use water to help treat acne?

The recommended water intake per day is 8 glasses. If you suffer from acne, this is the MINIMUM amount of water you should drink. Juice, tea, and other beverages don't count toward this goal. If you are physically active and exercise regularly, even more water should be drunk.

Also, the quality of the water you drink makes a difference as well. Tap water can contain impurities that your body must work to remove. If you are unsure of the quality of the tap water in your area, you may consider buying bottled drinking water.
