Let's all team up with Canada this week and use this as a great reason to quit smoking once and for all.

National Non-Smoking Week has been observed in Canada during the third week in January for more than 20 years. During this week there are a wide variety of activities and participants across the country, National Non-Smoking Week is one of the most important events in Canada's ongoing public education efforts on controlling tobacco-use.

The goals of National Non-Smoking Week are:

- to educate Canadians about the dangers of smoking;

- to prevent non-smokers from starting to smoke and becoming addicted to tobacco;

- to help smokers quit;

- to promote the right of individuals to breathe air unpolluted by tobacco smoke; and

- to assist in the attainment of a smoke-free society in Canada.

National Non-Smoking Week also features what is called Weedless Wednesday This day focuses on the benefits of cessation and promotes the community resources available to help smokers quit. It takes a “one day at a time" approach to being able to quit smoking, a concept appealing to many smokers who may be discouraged at the thought of an entire week - or lifetime - without cigarettes, but who may be able to cope with one smoke-free day.

Of course you do not have to live in Canada to be able to take advantage of this great opportunity to quit smoking. Use this as a starting block to make the rest of your life National Non-Smoking Week. Good luck to everyone who gives an honest attempt at giving up smoking this week.
