Fighting Communicable Diseases In Children

About half of all deaths in children under five are caused by five preventable and treatable communicable diseases (pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles, malaria and HIV/AIDS). Roughly 1ne million of these deaths are newborns. Malnutrition, poverty and poor health systems all increase a child’s health risks.

Immunization is a very cost-effective way to improve children’s health. Roughly 3 million deaths are prevented each year thanks to vaccines against diseases such as measles, tetanus, diphtheria and yellow fever. But nearly 40 million children are still not immunized, resulting in 2 million preventable child deaths a year. New vaccines will soon be available against pneumonia, meningitis and acute diarrhea, diseases that cause over 1 million child deaths a year. Through its engagement in the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), and its own project work, the Bank is supporting governments to strengthen national immunization programs and improve access to priority existing and new vaccines.

Innovative Financing for Priority Health Technologies

The Bank is playing an active role in exploring innovative financing mechanisms such as Advance Market Commitments (AMC), a means to accelerate the development of and access to priority new vaccines to developing countries. An AMC is a financial commitment to subsidize the future purchase (up to a pre-agreed price) of a vaccine not yet available, if the vaccine meets pre-defined standards and is demanded by developing countries. The AMC establishes a larger and more credible developing country vaccine market at time when industry is making pivotal investment decisions based on its perception of the market. In practice, the AMC establishes a market that otherwise is viewed as too small and unpredictable to support investment by the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry.
