If you have high ldl, there are steps you can take to protect your cardiovascular health. Lowering cholesterol can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

While a certain amount of cholesterol is necessary to normal body functioning, elevated ldl levels increase coronary risk.

Cholesterol and other fats cannot dissolve and they need lipoproteins, which act as carriers to transport them to and from cells. Imbalances may occur, though, and high ldl (lipoprotein) can result.

Where does cholesterol come from and how does it build up in our bodies?

Cholesterol originates from two major sources, from liver production and from dietary intake. Our body produces about 80% and the rest is derived from what we eat.

The liver manufactures and secretes LDL cholesterol into the blood and removes it, as well. A high number of active LDL receptors on the liver surface can result in rapid removal of cholesterol from the blood and low blood LDL, which is beneficial; however, a deficiency of these receptors can result in elevated ldl levels.

Elevated or high ldl increases the risk of coronary heart disease because cholesterol is deposited on artery walls, causing formation of a hard, thick substance called plaque. Over time, this plaque causes a thickening of the walls and a narrowing of the arteries, which is known as atherosclerosis.

When your ldl levels are too high, your arteries may become clogged, presenting a dangerous risk of a stroke or a heart attack.

A number of strategies can be employed when attempting to lower high ldl.

Changing from a sedentary lifestyle to a more active one may help. Stopping smoking and reducing extra weight can change undesirable ldl levels.

Changing how you prepare food (grilling, roasting, baking or broiling instead of frying, reducing salt and using herbs for flavoring) can help to combat high ldl.

You should also incorporate certain foods into your diet that are known for their cholesterol-lowering effects. Try to consume fish at least twice a week. Fatty fish can make an important difference if you are trying to lower ldl levels. EPA and DHA found in fish oil help reduce the risk factors for heart disease, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure. These substances can help to prevent and treat atherosclerosis by inhibiting the development of plaque and blood clots, which can clog arteries.

When choosing meat, select lean menu items and discard skin and any fat. Switch over to low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Plan to incorporate whole grain and high-fiber foods into your diet. Include almonds, walnuts, and avocados, soybeans, garlic, and mushrooms, oat bran, beans (kidney, pintos, black, navy), flax seeds and onions. These foods offer known benefits if you have high ldl.

Use olive oil or polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oils. Avoid oils that are high in saturated fat. Hydrogenated oils contain trans-fatty acids, which can raise cholesterol.

Studies have shown that heart attack risk is decreased by as much as 25% for every 10% drop in cholesterol levels. A diet that is low in saturated fat and high in whole grains and soluble fiber makes good sense for anyone.

If you are concerned about your ldl levels, you may also be interested to know that natural substances contain ingredients that have proven very effective.

Policosanol is derived from sugar cane and beeswax. It decreases total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein. Lecithin oil can inhibit absorption of cholesterol and is beneficial for those suffering with high ldl , vascular disorders, and heart disease. Constituents contained in oryzanol rice bran oil have been found to reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides. Selenium is a trace mineral that can be used in a preventive manner for atherosclerosis and stroke.

Natural substances are gaining recognition. Tangible results experienced by patients during clinical trials have shown these substances can have a significant impact on ldl levels.
