Laser Acne Treatment - Use the Power of Light to Treat Your Acne

Laser acne treatment is a relatively new method used to treat acne. In addition to treating acne, the use of lasers has also been found to reduce acne scarring. Acne treatments have traditionally been in the form of either a topical cream, or an antibiotic ointment.

Acne is typically formed when a hormone change causes our sebaceous glands to produce more oil than usual. When the excess oil mixes with dead skin cells, it clogs our pores. This causes bacteria to form below the skins surface which causes acne. Common areas that acne can develop are the face, scalp, neck, chest, arms, and back.

There are several types of lasers available to treat acne. Different lasers use different wavelengths of light to target different characteristics in the skin. One type of laser directly targets and kills the bacteria growing beneath the skin. Treatments using this type of laser can see results that could last up to eight months.

A second type of laser targets and shrinks the sebaceous glands to inhibit oil production. It is believed that this form of treatment causes no long term damage. Doctors will often use a combination of both types of lasers to optimize the results.

Treatments are usually carried out on a monthly basis, and it may be necessary to have as many as eight treatments. Once the first series of treatments have been completed it is often necessary to have touch-ups done on occasion.

Most people experience mild pain with laser acne treatments. It is often described as being snapped on the skin with a rubber band. For people who find the pain unbearable, a numbing agent can often be applied to the skin to help alleviate discomfort.

Not all states regulate who can perform a procedure with a laser. As with any treatment, there can be side effects. It is important to make sure any treatment center is overseen by a doctor or dermatologist. Do not hesitate to ask for their qualifications to help make sure you are having the work performed by a professional.
