Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disorder seen by doctors, and it affects over 17 million people in the United States. It is usually categorized as mild, moderate or severe. Although it is not fatal, acne can cause unsightly changes in the appearance of anyone who suffers from it. Effective acne prevention, control and treatment can forestall the emotional and physical scarring so often associated with this condition.

Acne Causes

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs in the sebaceous glands of the hair follicles to which they are attached. These sebaceous glands make an oil known as sebum. Normally, the sebum combines with the dead skin cells and exits the pores. However, a real problem arises when the oil and dead cells are produced too fast and clog the follicles. A closed pore produces a white, cheesy plug called a whitehead, while a pore that stays open darkens at the top becoming a blackhead.

Best Methods For Acne Prevention and Control

1. Be aware of anything that triggers your acne outbreaks and avoid those things. The usual culprits include make-up, stressful situations, hormonal levels, certain foods, iodide, excessive perspiration, over heated rooms, tight clothing, and the list goes on and on. People have many different things that seem to aggravate or bring on acne attacks.

2. Cleanse the skin thoroughly. People with acne should gently wash their skin at least twice a day with a mild or specialized cleanser, warm water and a white wash cloth. Rinse well and pat areas dry with a soft towel. Any vigorous scrubbing could further irritate the acne pimples. Close pores with a cotton ball saturated with a non-alcoholic toner. Lastly, apply your special moisturizer. Never go to bed without completing a nighttime acne skin care routine.

3. Use an anti-bacterial exfoliate weekly. Dead skin cells that are normally present on the skin can be effectively removed with an exfoliate product.

4. Avoid using make-up as much as possible. However, oil-free, water-based moisturizers labeled non-comedogenic are preferred. Oil-based cosmetics should never be used by anyone prone to having acne outbreaks.

5. Never squeeze an acne lesion. This could cause the condition to spread and worsen and even set up inflammation and infection. In fact, you should make every effort to keep your hands away from your face since hands can be a source of bacteria.

6. Keep hair clean and off of face and neck. Hair contains oils that could worsen the acne condition.

7. Eat a nourishing, well balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Also, drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Other essentials that contribute to acne prevention and control include exercise, plenty of good, relaxing sleep and stress reduction.

It is encouraging for acne sufferers to know that scientific research is being conducted every day on acne prevention and control. Just recently it was reported that University of Cincinnati dermatologists are testing a new topical gel which reduces abnormal clogging of the pores while fighting off certain bacterial infections linked to severe acne development.

In conclusion, acne prevention and control take time and attention. The main goal is of the treatment is usually twofold: to treat the existing pimples and prevent others from breaking out. Always consult your doctor or dermatologist if your acne persists or gets worse.
