The hormone cortisol is called the stress hormone for good reason. Cortisol is the hormone that is released by the adrenal gland in our bodies when we are faced with frightful situations. It gives us the “fight or flight" feeling. Almost every aspect of the human body is affected by the release of cortisol. It aids the body in regulating the amounts of its fats, carbohydrates and proteins and helps control blood pressure. Cortisols main function is to stimulate our appetite by releasing insulin into the blood and maintaining blood sugar levels. If there is to much cortisol in the body, due to a tremendous amount of continuing stressors the result could be significant weight gain or difficulty losing weight.

There is also research that tells us that while acute stress dampens the appetite, chronic stress increases it. Chronic stress is that which continues day after day and steadily increases or never subsides. These types of stressors are not things that can stress you out at work and drift away later in a hot bubble bath. Chronic stressors are those that bring on feelings of hopelessness or helplessness. A general feeling of defeat is described from sufferers.

Scientists have said that when stressful situations arise adrenaline and cortisol are both released into the body. However, when the situation has calmed down the adrenaline subsides but the cortisol remains. The two hormones together raise the heart rate, tense the muscles and increase blood pressure. This is the “fight or flight" response that readies you for action in a dangerous and stressful situation. Cortisol is also an appetite trigger. The purpose being to make you hungry enough to replace the valuable nutrients spent during your adrenaline filled moments. People tend to crave high carbs and sugary foods during this time. Some researchers say this is because they are producers of serotonin, a brain chemical that controls your mood. If your stressed and cranky- a dose of peach cobbler can heighten your mood.

Stress can cause weight gain and it is best to try to manage it. Consulting a doctor in drastic cases is helpful. Stress can be managed by medications in severe cases. There are ways to control the stressors in your life that cause weight gain. Learning better time management skills and cutting back on your commitments are great ways to make your days less stressful in general. Also think of comforting things to do besides eat when you feel stressed. Try reading a great book, taking a hot shower or bath, or even having a cup of herbal tea. Many people use gardening or journaling to relieve stress.

There are appetite suppressants and other products on the market that are able to help with weight loss. Hoodia, researchers have discovered, is highly efficient in weight loss.
