Fire in the Belly - Coping with Chronic Indigestion

If you suffer from chronic indigestion, there may be ways to control your indigestion and not have to take so much medication. There are natural home remedies which can help reduce the symptoms and possibly even treat the effects of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. These remedies are often used to replace antacids without the unwanted side effects of medications. Also, these remedies do not contain aluminum like some products, which has shown to cause senility and Alzheimer's disease.

One powerful herb that will help your digestive conditions is aniseed or anise. Additionally, anise also provides several other benefits for your body. You should use only the ash-colored anise that is referred to as green anise, European anise or sweet anise. Star anise and caraway, should not be used as a digestive aid.

Another natural remedy for indigestion is peppermint. Peppermint helps your digestion system, stomach problems, cramps, ulcers and gas.

Lavender can be a great aid for the stomach and helps to reduce the amount of the acid in the stomach.

Papaya delivers the digestive enzyme papain, which is promotes protein digestion. You can eat papaya with every meal. Use 500mg or more of papaya enzymes per meal.

Pineapples contain enzymes which include bromelain that reduces protein. Pineapples promote digestion, reduce inflammation caused by indigestion and help promote the healing of a damaged esophagus. high level of enzymes in fresh pineapple juice helps to stop indigestion. Bromelain can be bought as a tablet. Take 200 to 500mg per meal.

Chicory root contains endive and escarole. Boiling one and half cups of chicory root for five to ten minutes brews a tea you can drink to aid indigestion, acid reflux or heartburn. Add it to a salad as well!

Another option is cinnamon. Its antiseptic effect has the ability to sooth acidic stomachs. Cinnamon can be added to many foods and be eaten with your meal while giving your food a great and unique taste.

You can also grate the outer skin of a grapefruit and allow the shavings to dry. Once dry, you can store them away. When the symptoms of indigestion present themselves, Simply chew on them as a snack and they will help settle your stomach. Eat just a few at first to determine how many shavings you need to eat to settle your stomach.

Prevention is the best cure so to avoid acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion, so eat foods that are alkaline. The foods mentioned above can help provide relief, but it is important to add a salad to your diet everyday to help reduce indigestion.
