Jigsaw puzzles are solved by placing together matching cut tiles, resulting in the creation of a whole picture.  John Spilsbury is credited with their invention of the in the year 1760.  Originally it was thought of as a teaching tool. Today, maps made into puzzles are used to teach school children geography.

Classic puzzles were called push-fit and the tiles were not interlocking.  Historians say that jigsaw puzzles became quite popular in the early 20th century, and they became even more popular after the invention of interlocking tiles.  At first, these puzzles were entertainment for the rich, but mass production has now reduced the prices, and they are available to virtually anyone.

During the Depression of the 1930s, jigsaw puzzles became a very popular form of fun and entertainment for the family, and local pharmacies and libraries would lend them out to patrons.  Cardboard and wood puzzles which are antique are now considered highly sought after collectibles with completed antique puzzles being even more expensive.   Wood puzzles are thought to be the best and are are often handcrafted using special saws.

Typical puzzle sizes come in 500, 750, 1000 piece boxes.  Today, jigsaw puzzles are also available in two-sided, and 3-D varieties.   Modern puzzles are usually made of cardboard with photographs printed on it.  The cardboard picture is then machine cut into tiles with the help of specially designed metal blades.  Scenes of classic castles and famous mountains are very popular images in puzzles today.

Like all other games that have digital or computer counterparts these days, jigsaw puzzles are also available as computer games, which can be found online.  When you do a search on the web the results can be staggering.  There are many websites today that offer puzzle software that you can install and play on your computer, as well as sites which offer online shockwave jigsaw puzzles featuring a variety of subjects ranging from christmas to adult puzzles.  These websites offer a fantastic way to play and solve new and exciting free daily jigsaw puzzle without incurring any cost.   Finding your way around these puzzle sites however can be a daunting task.

Fortunately, there are special websites that are excellent guides to finding the best jigsaw puzzle games online.  One such popular site is JigsawPuzzleForSale.com   which I recommend to puzzle enthusiasts.
