Green tea is one of the top three selling fat loss products on the market today but are the benefits of green tea real? Can it really help you burn fat? When green tea first hit the mainstream sleeves it was announced at the breakthrough in dropping body fat and getting six pack abs. Then natural health professionals and research started to tell us about all the benefits of green tea. Sales increased and the legend of green tea grew more and more. Does green tea really help you burn fat and what are the benefits of green tea?

Green tea contain stimulants such as caffeine, theobromine and theophlline which all has fat burning potential. It's why every fat burning supplement has some amount of green tea in it today. A study by Diepvens looked at 46 dieting women who were all in different phases of fat loss and found that no clinical markers of weight loss were seen. Those same researchers examined green tea on a low energy population and found no increased calorie burning effect. Another study done by Westerterp found increased fat loss when people on a low-caffeine diet consumed green tea. So it seems that the fat burning benefit of green tea exists.

The benefits of green tea come from the catechines (antioxidants) which have been proven in research to reduce body fat and the growth of cancer cells. A 2004 Harvard Medical School report found that the catechines in green tea inhibit the growth and reproduction of cancer cells and it is now established that green tea may prevent bladder, colon, esophagus, pancreas, rectum and stomach cancer.

A 2004 article in the Circulation Journal concluded that “the more green tea patients consume, the less likely they are to have coronary artery disease. " So even though only about 10% of studies with green tea were done in humans we still do find a potential fat burning benefit of green tea. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition gave men green tea and found that they burned more calories than men who were given the exact same drink minus the green tea.

Another benefit of green tea has been found to lower blood sugar in animals and that green tea contains theanine, which increases the release of the neurotransmitter GABA, which exerts a calming effect on the brain. In addition green tea increases dopamine that increase the brains sense of pleasure. The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found that green tea has protective mechanisms for the brain when dealing with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

The benefits of green tea can be seen at 270-1125 mg's per day. One cup of green tea contains 100mg's so it would be in your best bet to drink at least three cups per day to really get the benefits of green tea.
