Eating Out in South Africa

Visitors: 191

The restaurant industry has never been as popular as it is today. Most modern cities are home to a booming restaurant trade, with a wide variety of options. Discerning customers are presented with more than just coffee shops, steak houses and pizza joints - nowadays the possibilities range from all you can eat organic buffets to cigar bars.

Themed Restaurants

Themed restaurants have become more popular in today's growing service industry. These days it's not uncommon to hear of restaurants with décor, dishes and delivery ranging from medieval to nautical. Even different countries and cultures from across the globe are being represented in the collective restaurant selection. Years ago, Chinese and Italian menus were available in most cities. Modern menus incorporate countless nations - Jamaican, Mexican, Vietnamese, Cuban and even some African foods are popular norms in the kitchens most major cities around the world. Not to mention the bars and pubs that feature cocktail recipes, furniture and ambiance from another time or place.

Family Restaurants

In South Africa, we are big on family restaurants and eating out is a full family affair. A trip to the local eatery could be a midweek emergency dinner, or a Sunday lunch with granny and doggie bags. Most family restaurants also double up as ideal function venues. Broad menus featuring a plate for every palate, gracious hosts, great facilities and exciting entertainment (which is usually supervised) for the kids make family restaurants a well deserved outing for any clan.

Entertainment for the kids is a relief, but of course dad also deserves his fair share. A lot of family restaurants provide televisions to keep sports fans entertained. Televised cricket, rugby and soccer are common elements in restaurants these days - especially during major tournaments featuring our home teams.

Romantic Wining and Dining

French champagne and candlelit tables are always a great start to a good night out. Be it a first date, an engagement or an anniversary, romantic atmospheres and a warm environment are an essential ingredient to any cities restaurant selection. Just don't forget to make that reservation!

Fast Food

The convenience of fast food on the run can be a life saver. And South Africa has embraced the fast food culture. With a host of major international chains thriving on our shores, it's a given that a quick burger, muffin or pie are firm favourites across the county.

Healthy Eating

In keeping with the global rise in health and nutritional awareness (and to balance out the fast food), South African's are becoming increasingly concerned about what they put into their bodies. Many new restaurants are opting for healthier menus, some featuring only organic products and nutritious ingredients - and these restaurants are becoming increasingly popular.

South African Dining

South Africa has created enough signature dishes to open an entire strip of restaurants. The diversity of our cultures shines through the myriad of recipes we call our own. A new South African meal would consist of a time-honoured baboti, washed down with umqombothi traditional beer, followed by a healthy slice of milk tart for dessert.
