Know the Different Varieties of Olive Oil and Their Uses

The modern hectic lifestyle of a human being, greatly affects his eating habits. People tend to rush more towards unhygienic food items which eventually affect their health and make them vulnerable to various diseases.

Mediterranean diet has always been known for offering the best of health benefits, and one of the prime reason for it being considered as a healthy diet is the usage of olive oil. From the Mediterranean region, olive oil has made its mark all over the world.

Olive oil is basically produced by pressing or crushing of olive fruit and extracting the juice out of it. It is considered as the best cooking oil for health and is easily adaptable to a number of cooking methods such as grilling, roasting, frying and baking etc. The subtle flavor of olive oil provides a good base for spice infused dressings and does not alter the flavor of food, at all.

In India, olive oil comes in many variants, and it’s good to understand about all types and their advantages before buying it. Following are some of its types:

  1. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: Perhaps the most popular and the purest olive oils of all, Extra-virgin is the highest grade of olive oil which is obtained by the first cold pressing of the olive fruit within 24 hours of harvesting. It is the world's healthiest edible oil with the highest levels of MUFA 82% (good fat) and one of the lowest levels of saturated fat 10%( bad fat). Known for its excellent aroma and flavor, extra-virgin enhances the texture and taste of the food and gives you the best food preparation experience. One of the greatest benefits of it is the huge amount of anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory substances it contains. Consuming it on a daily basis may help you prevent various health problems like heart stroke; cancer, diabetes etc. It is mostly used in dressing up salads as well as vegetables.
  2. Pure Olive Oil: It is actually a mixture of extra-virgin and refined olive oil. It is best suited to cook Continental and Mediterranean cuisine. One can Use it for making pastas, stir-frying, stews and in dough for baking. This is the grade that's best suited for body massage, as well. It works wonders for your skin as well as hair.
  3. Pomace Olive Oil: This type of olive oil is best suitable for Indian style of cooking. It is obtained by treating the olive residue paste (after the fruit has been pressed) with solvents to extract the oil and then mixing it with extra virgin oil to enhance the product as well as its health benefits. Above all, it is the least expensive olive oil among all, making it more affordable for every household.

All in all, choosing olive oil as the main source of diet enhances your health and helps you to remain fit and active.
