Stocks in US close higher, did McDonald's financial results help? - Spread Betting News

Spread betting provider City Index ( takes a look at the financial activity shaping the markets on 10th May 2011.

Sales increased in April for McDonald's, with its Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa market enjoying particular success.

The fast-food giant revealed that sales for this segment increased during the month ended April 30th 2011 by 6.5 per cent compared to the same period of 2010.

Such a sales rise was matched in Europe, while in the US the figure stood at four per cent.

Following the news, stocks in the US advanced, with a 0.78 per cent share prices boost for McDonald's by market close.

Meanwhile, the Standard and Poor's 500 Index increased by 0.45 per cent, with the energy sector rallying the most (1.61 per cent).

The Nasdaq 100 advanced by 0.55 per cent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lifted by 0.36 per cent.

Commenting on the sales boost at McDonald's, its chief executive officer Jim Skinner stated that sales continue to rise “as we focus on optimising the menu with the right food and beverage offerings, modernising the restaurant experience by upgrading our customer service and restaurant designs and broadening our accessibility through convenience and everyday value".
