Making your dream computer a reality

Visitors: 149

So you want the biggest and best computer. You may want it for any number of reasons - beating your friends at your weekly video-games session, creating dazzling videos or animations from scratch, or even just enjoying your movies and music in crystal-clear quality - but there’s no doubt that without it, you’ll feel like you’re missing out on something. But with the price of these dream machines, what’s the best way to get hold of one of them?

1. Build it. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts - and so is the price. By building your own computer from scratch, you not only save a ton on its retail price, you can also decide exactly what goes into it. Want more RAM instead of those ugly speakers? Need more graphics punch instead of processor power? Building your own computer puts the choices in your hands. It requires a fair bit of technical know-how, though, so unless you have experience in computer assembly you should probably ask an expert or knowledgeable friend first.

2. Offset it. If you’re using your computer for work or your own business, you may be able to offset its costs against your tax. By claiming the dream rig as a work expense, you can get tax deductions which may add up very nicely in your favour. This only works if your use of the computer is kosher, though: not only are false claims unethical, but the Government has been cracking down on them as of late.

3. Rent it. That way, you can have your cake AND eat it too. Computer rentals are perfect when you need a PC or laptop for a specific period of time: anything from a LAN party weekend to a year-long graphic design or animation project. It’s a classic case of all the benefits, none of the baggage - except it actually works. For those looking to own a new machine at the end of it, computer finance options allow you to take out loans on computers, peripherals and accessories. Computer finance can be slightly costlier than renting, but it means you’ll eventually own what you’ve paid for - not that bad a thing if you’re doing a lot of work on it. Or play. Maybe both.

No matter what you want that computer for, there’s a way to get it for less than you’d otherwise expect. That dream - and finally taking down that annoying mate of yours - may become a reality sooner than you think.
