RegCure by ParetoLogic is perhaps the most popular registry cleaner on the market today. But does it give your PC a performance boost, and should you buy it?
To see if this registry program delivers the promised results, we decided to take RegCure Registry Cleaner for a test drive and publish the findings of our tests.
Hardware and OS we used to test RegCure
We tested RegCure on a low-end Celeron 4 machine running Windows XP SP3. The computer was running pretty slow at the time of testing so we wanted to see if repairing registry problems would help squeeze more performance out of this PC.
Is the software easy to use for the average user?
Ease of use is very important since you don't want to be left wondering what the software is doing or which button to click to get things done. Fortunately, RegCure is very straightforward, with all the important features like scanning and cleaning the registry, back up, and settings easily accessible. RegCure also features an easy-to-understand progress indicator so you'll never wonder what the software is doing and why.
Is it safe to install and use?
The Windows registry is a critical system component. That's why if you're going to make changes to it, you'd better be prepared. Seems that the guys at ParetoLogic have thought about it, as RegCure comes with a full-blown backup feature. RegCure will backup any changes you make, so you can easily restore your registry to a top-notch state if necessary, making it safe to use.
Does RegCure actually speed up your PC?
To answer this question, we first measured the start up time of our Windows XP box, which turned out to be 1 minute and 57 seconds - pretty sluggish for a Celeron 4 machine. Then we ran RegCure in auto-scan mode, told it to find all invalid entries and other junk in the registry, and then fixed all errors.
The total number of errors found on our machine was 277, and after the registry cleaner fixed them all, we recorded the boot up time again. This time, Windows XP booted in 1 minute and 13 seconds, which is an impressive 38% improvement.
Note that on your PC and under different version of Windows, RegCure will probably find a different number of errors, so you results could be slightly different.
Overall, we were pretty happy with the results of our tests, and will continue to test RegCure under both XP and Vista to see how well it performs.
