So you computer is running like a slug and you suspect that your Windows registry is in need of repair. There's no need to reach for the aspirin, fixing problems with the registry doesn't have to be hard. In fact, with the help of these tips and a goof registry cleaner, you will have your computer running like new in no time. Read on for some top tips to fix your registry quickly and easily.
Tip #1 - Don't Edit Your Registry By Hand
The Windows registry was not intended for humans. It is cryptic code like mumbo jumbo that can be nerve racking even for computer pros. One small mistake and your computer is toast. The registry is very important to the overall operation of the computer, so avoid making any hand edits to your registry as it can lead to unfortunate results.
Tip #2 - Always Make a Backup
As you would anytime you make a change, it can be a good idea to run a backup of your registry before using anything to repair it. This way, if things go awry (which is not common), then you can simply restore from the backup and try again.
To make a backup of your registry:
Go to Start > Run (or similar depending on your version of Windows)
Type regedit. exe
If all goes well, a window will pop open and this is your registry. Remember tip #1 and do NOT make any edits in this at all.
Next, go to File > Export and save a copy of your registry data
Thats it! Now you have a copy of your original registry in case you need it.
Tip #3 - Use Registry Repair Software To Scan And Clean
These days, there are a number of very good programs that make windows registry repair a breeze. They are easy to use and highly effective. I have left you a link below to download a free version of my favorite, RegCure. Whatever software you choose, this is what you will be using to scan and repair your registry.
Some registry repair software programs offer customizable options and settings for those who like to have more control over the repair process. Others are geared towards less technical users and are point and click simple. Choose a registry cleaner that you feel comfortable with and follow the guided screens to scan and repair your registry. After you tell it what to do, the actual registry cleaning is done automatically.
Tip #4 - Set up Your Scheduler
Repairing the registry once is usually not good enough. Over time, your computer will once again develop the same problems. In order to keep your registry in good condition all of the time, it will be necessary to perform regular maintenance. Fortunately many registry repair software makers took this in to consideration when they added a scheduler to their software.
By configuring the scheduler that comes with some registry repair tools, you can have the software clean the registry automatically at a regularly scheduled time. Personally, I find once a month to be enough for me. Scheduling your registry cleanings is also a good way to make sure that you don't forget and fall behind on maintenance.
I hope that these tips will help you repair your Windows registry fast and easy. The process of cleaning the registry is actually quite easy and can take as little as 10 minutes once you know your software. By fixing the problems with the registry, you are working to make your computer run faster and error free.
