Backup Software - What Software is Best for Backing Up Your Data?

Visitors: 537

There are countless software programs available nowadays for backing up your computer, hard drive or mobile device data. Most of the programs are user-friendly so that even newbies have no excuse for not backing up their computers anymore.

Now, what you choose to back up depends on what you don't want to lose should something happen. . . and something always does happen. Losing data isn't a matter of “if"; it's a matter of “when".

It may be that the data you want to protect are family photos, your resume, or your emails. Or you might want to protect three years of income tax returns. Businesses can have confidential files, employee and customer records, and proprietary business data. In other words, the things we want to protect are all important to us, but some may be “more important" than others in the sense of what a loss of that data would cost us.

Software solutions, therefore, exist for a variety of needs, and there are certain features you want to look for.

First and foremost is the ability to schedule backups so that you don't have to remember to do it. . . which is, after all, the reason most people fail to backup their data appropriately.

You also probably will want software that allows for both full and incremental backups. Full backups should be run the first time you are backing up your computer, while incremental backups are used to back up only those files that are new or have been changed. This makes future backups run much more quickly.

If you are storing confidential data, backup software that provides an encryption option is also something to look for, particularly if you store your data off-site or online or do not secure it as well as perhaps you should.

Plus, if you have a business where people are working all the time, not just 9-5, you'll want backup software that will allow the software to back up files that are in use or locked, or else your most recent, most important data may not get backed up during the latest scheduled backup.

When determining what backup software is best for you, make sure you understand your needs and choose accordingly. There are top backup software programs for large and small networks as well as for individual computers, and searching for backup software reviews from such sites as CDNet can help you choose which one is best for you.

In addition to backup software, you may want to consider a backup service like iDrive or Mozy Backup. These services provide peace of mind from not only computer crashes and system failures, but they also protect your data from fires, floods and other natural disasters.
