If you’re thinking for an upgrade for your laptop the HGST Travelstar 7K500 500GB could be a good choice. It comes in a standard 2.5 inch platform that perfectly fit in any notebooks and a 500GB disk space gives you more room for your programs, photos, mp3’s and movies.

Fast Performance

The HGST Travelstar 7K500 500GB features a 7,200 RPM spindle speed which above any laptop hard drives with only 5,400 RPM. This aims for faster performance and quicker data retrieval as well. In addition to that is the 16MB memory cache that highly contributes to its outstanding performance.

Technical Specifications

The HGST Travelstar 7K500 500GB is designed for high performance specifications aside from its 7,200 RPM speed and 16MB memory cache. It has a Z-height of 9.5mm with two physical platters that makes it ideal in laptops and notebooks which is widely use of today. However, it is not suitable for ultra thin notebooks.

Each platter has 250GB capacity with a total of 500GB in its two disks. The drive interface is at 3Gb/s with 4.2ms average latency and has a seek time of 1ms. Though it is rated 7,200 RPM this drive consume less power so that it leaves your more battery life for longer usage.

The Max power startup consumption is 5.5 watts and an average seek power consumption is only 2 watts while its read/write power consumption is only 1.8 watts.

The HGST Travelstar 7K500 500GB In Action

The HGST Travelstar 7K500 500GB is a quick start drive that took only three seconds to power on then it is ready to kick in. When running at full speed you can hardly hear a noise at two feet away. During read and write operations a soft click is audible but to the point of almost disregarding it.

If you try to compare it to other hard drive such as the Seagate it has a definite low noise level considering its 7,200 RPM. If we take a look at its temperature level the idle temperature is only at 37-degree centigrade which is lower than its rated value of 55-degrees. During heavy read/write operations the temperature doesn’t climb to 40-degrees range. This is how cow cool the drive is even under extensive process.

This is what makes the HGST Travelstar 7K500 500GB an excellent drive design with dynamic air flow and outstanding acoustic design that lowers the drive noise level which is better than any competing brand.

Using the StorageMark 2010 HTPC profile, the Travelstar 7K500 shows outstanding performance that includes playing a 720P HD movie in media player, one480P SD playing in VLC, three movie downloading at the same time using iTunes and another 1080i HDTV has been recorded simultaneously. The drive can handle everything instantly without lagging, that’s what we called a pure performance power.

The power consumption during these heavy applications shows a lot better than its given rated specification values. The highest power consumption recorded is only 2.87 watts while the starting power is only 4.7 watts. It has the highest drive efficiency with 10-percent less than to its competitor in the form of Seagate and Scorpio black.

The HGST Travelstar 7K500 500GB do well in various test and shows nothing but solid performance. The price it offer is considerable too low to pass on which is harder to ignore if you're craving for the best laptop hard drive.
