OCZ Vertex 3 240GB Review – The Fastest SSD For 2011?

If a lightning fast SSD is what you’re looking for, the OCZ Vertex 3 is perfectly right for you. With its sequential Read of 550MB/s and a write speed of 520MB/s, this will definitely blow your mind. A top notch memory controller with SandForce SF-2000 SATA 6GB/s, this brings the Vertex 3 to its spectacular speed.

Using the latest SF-2000, this promises a whole new level of performance in the form of OCZ Vertex 3. The SF-2000 controller uses the DuraWrite technology that compresses the data to be stored in the NAND memory chips. As a result, a lesser space is used and lower memory write wear off, thus promotes a longer life span.

The SandForce controller has the ability to tweak the power saving that helps conserve your notebook battery life. To push it further, an AES-256 engine is added to its existing AES-128 giving you a double data encryption.

The Vertex 3 SSD is made of sixteen 16GB Micron to come up with 240GB 25nm NAND chips. But, the formatted capacity remains 223.5GB of usable space; we ripped off with 17GB here. These SSD’s are available in different sizes to meet your demands, they are 60GB, 90GB, 120GB, 240GB and 480GB, backed up with 3-year warranty to prove it’s worthy.

Testing The OCZ Vertex 3

The Vertex 3 has a written specification of 550MB/s read and 520MB/s write speed, let’s find out if these numbers will meet. This best performance can be achieved if dealing with all compressible data’s, makes it possible with the DuraWite data compression features. But when the data’s are incompressible, the values will change significantly.

The Vertex 3 was tested against 5 of the best SSD on the market today. The results show that it clearly dominates all of them in all charts. The Sequential Read/write speed test surprisingly exceeded the Vertex 3 specs, producing an excellent numbers of 559MB/s and 521MB/s that nearly saturate the SATA 600MB/s interface.

The OCZ vertex 3 is a solid performer, this probably the fastest SSD you can have today. This requires the SATA 6GB/s interface, why? Obviously, SATA 300MB/s doesn’t make it possible to run more than 500MB/s, this what makes the Vertex 3 very impressive.

This drive uses the best component you can have to boost its performance to the roof. The 25nm NAND Synchonous memory chips and the SandForce SF-2281 controller with DuraWrite compression technology found in this chip, much better than Marvell 9174.
