Why Arent Reverse Cell Phone Lookups Free?

You may be under the impression that reverse phone lookups are not free, especially if you have used this service to frequently search numbers and have found no results or extremely basic information. Even though this service is not as free as it is often implied, it actually does provide free details, but only for landline numbers that are made publicly available in local phone directories.

Thus, if you search a published number, you can find out the phone owner's name, address, and telecommunications company at no cost to you. Unfortunately, in many cases, when you encounter a number you don't recognize that you want to investigate, the phone number in question always seems to belong to a private number, such as one that is unlisted or a cellular phone. Therefore, when you attempt to find out who the number owner is for free, your search is unsuccessful.

Why is the identity and address of a private phone number owner not provided for free? There are two main reasons:

1 - Private numbers are not published in a phone directory - Since unlisted numbers are not featured in a telephone directory, public records are not freely available. Thus, the only free information is what can be obtained from the actual phone number, such as the geographical location based on the area code.

2 - There are privacy laws regarding private numbers - Phone consumers who unlist their landline numbers pay a monthly fee for this service to protect their privacy. Wireless phone users, on the other hand, are automatically excluded from the phone directory. This is because a cellular consumer is charged for all incoming and outgoing calls regardless if they are local or long distance. Thus, by making their numbers publicly accessible in a directory, anyone who cared to perform a forward search on the person would be given their number, which puts mobile customers at risk of receiving an increase of unwanted calls they would be subject to pay for.

Due to the fact that cell numbers are not listed in phone directories, this not only effects forward searches, but also a reverse cell phone lookup service. The reason is each people finder service uses public phone records to obtain the information you are investigating. As a result, you must pay to find results, because a company that looks up the number for you is required to pay to obtain the information you want.
