Some More Tips on Managing Prostate Cancer Pain

In a previous article, I gave you some tips on how to manage and prostate cancer pain you may have. Here are a few more that I know will help. The goal of pain management is not only relief from pain, but also the maintenance of your normal quality of life. All methods of pain management attempt to either control the cause of the pain or alter your perception of it.

Although pain management techniques are many and varied, therapeutic approaches can be classified as either pharmacological or non-pharmacological. Pharmacological pain control involves the use of analgesics, as well as other medications that intensify the analgesics’ effects or modify your mood or pain perception. Non-pharmacological approaches include:

  • Behavioral techniques
  • Radiation
  • Surgery
  • Neurological and neurosurgical interventions
  • Traditional nursing and psychosocial interventions

The latter measures attempt to promote your comfort and evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy. Because of the complex nature of cancer-related pain, successful management usually involves a combination of techniques.

There are also alternative methods that can help ease pain. These can include hypnosis, physiotherapy, and relaxation techniques such as meditation. Possibly one of the best treatments for prostate cancer pain is a supportive group of people.

Whether they are your family, friends or a cancer support group, these people are there to listen, talk with, and provide you with the emotional support you need. Some people say that laughter is the best medicine, and in a way it is true. People often forget their pain when in the company of a good friend.

But the thing that ultimately determines how you handle your pain is YOU. You can make the choice to be miserable and in constant pain. Or you can say to yourself that this is temporary and it will not control your life. A positive attitude is the biggest first step one can make in managing pain. Naturally your health team will do all they can to assist you. But it starts with you!
