Fear getting cancer? You're not alone. The fear of cancer is one of the most prominent long-term anxieties plaguing modern man. A UK non-profit survey has recently demonstrated that more than 15% of UK citizens consider the fear of cancer to be their greatest fear. In many individuals, this fear can result in such debilitating panic that it interferes with normal life. Hasn't cancer caused enough pain already, to those who have it and their grieving friends and relatives? It is a real tragedy that, in addition to the devastating effects of the disease itself, cancer must cause this second-order anxiety among people who don't even have it.
Cancer Anxiety Can Hurt Your Life
Many of those who live their lives dreading this terrible disease are embarrassed about their fearful state. These victims of phobia worry that their anxieties are not “legitimate, " even though they cause them significant pain. After all, what's to be afraid of? Doesn't their “imaginary" suffering do disservice to actual victims of the disease?
However, cancer phobia is a serious problem in its own right. This kind of terror can seriously interfere with a sufferer's medical health. Those who fear cancer routinely refuse to see medical health professionals or clinics, out of irrational dread of “catching" the disease-or because they dread the prospect of being diagnosed! This, ironically, can prevent doctors from diagnosing malignant tumors in time to cure the patient, if they do get the disease.
Terror Destroys Compassion
Perhaps most harrowing of all, anxiety about the disease can destroy our compassion for its actual sufferers. Someone who is obsessed with the idea of harboring a cancerous tumor in their body will avoid visiting a suffering victim of cancer-even if that victim is a family member or friend. Without being consciously aware of what they're doing, those who are afraid can reject family members or friends at exactly those moments when they most need help and support.
No Need To Fear Getting Cancer
Fortunately, there is good news for phobia sufferers: the fear of getting cancer is a psychological, rather than a physiological, phenomenon. This may seem obvious. What is not obvious is that the 20th and 21st centuries have brought about some powerful tools to resolve psychological problems. Although there's no real cure for cancer yet, there techniques that can bring about a cure for cancer phobia in many people.
Eradicate Your Terror With NLP
Most of these techniques involve a set of practices known as NLP, or neuro-linguistic programming. Developed in the 1970's, this powerful system combines computer programming, linguistics, and medical science. NLP techniques are related to hypnotherapy, in that both seek to teach people new behavior patterns by influencing the unconscious, rather than the conscious, mind. This is the most reliable way to eradicate irrational phobias, as these-as the very phrase, “irrational phobias, " implies-are always grounded in the unconscious.
With the help of NLP and hypnotherapy, trained mental health professionals can stop sufferers’ fears of cancer in their at their root: the unconscious mind. NLP and hypnotherapy techniques will let you experience the emotions that ordinarily lead to terror in a controlled environment-and then teach your mind to respond differently to those emotions. NLP and hypnotherapy can't cure cancer; but they can make sure you never have to irrationally fear getting cancer again.
