Shifting homes is no easy task. There is a lot to stress and fuss about packing all your items neatly and rightly. Even when you have movers, packing your items can take a lot of time and effort. It is also necessary to not just throw in all your items into the boxes and let your movers haul it into your new home. This will only increase your work when you arrange them in your new home.

When you are packing your items, it is good to discard those that are unnecessarily cluttering your home. Have a garage sale and get rid of things you no longer need. You can also donate some of your things to a charity. With that done, you get down to packing all your items. Here are a few tips that can help you to pack your entire home effectively without any hassle.

Organize and group the things

Once you have discarded the unnecessary items, you can sort out the things you are going to take to your new home. Make a list of all items you are going to pack. Having a list of all the items that goes into the box will help your later in your new home when you need your kettle in the morning. Listing all the items can also give you an idea about the number of moving boxes you will need.

Get moving boxes

A common question that arises is whether you should purchase moving boxes or use the cardboard boxes that you have stored. It is best to use a combination of both. For small items you can use the corrugated boxes you already have. For heavy items, get the moving boxes. If you shift homes regularly, you can even store your moving boxes. Another option is to get the moving boxes from your friends or relatives who made a move recently.

Pack them

Once you have the boxes and listed the entire items to be packed, start packing the things. Wrap heavy items with paper or bubble wrap and place them at the bottom. You can have a layer of peanut that the bottom to avoid bruises to your packing items. Add the lighter items on top and separate them from other items with cushioning foams. When you are done packing, cushion the pockets with crumpled papers. Do not over pack them. Close the boxes and secure them safely with tapes.

Label the box

You have already listed the items. Now, as you pack, list the items in each box. This will come in handy later when you are sorting and arranging your things in your new home. It is also advisable to be very specific in labeling your boxes. For example, when it comes to kitchen items, label your boxes as cutlery or dinner sets rather than just kitchen items. This will help you locate the items easily later.

Use colour coded labels

Apart from labeling your items, have colour coded labels for your moving boxes. Have a colour for each room in your new home. Depending upon where you want the boxes to be in your new home, colourcode the box. For example, you can colour code all the kitchen items in red and leave a red coloured label on your kitchen door. This will help the movers to transfer the boxes to the specific room according to the label.
