Resumes - Responsibilities and Accomplishments Will Land the Interview

Only 1% of resumes contain the mix of responsibilities and accomplishments that let employers know the applicant can get the regular work done and overcome the obstacles that eventually come along.

95% of candidates create a resume with a long, boring list of day-to-day responsibilities. 4% focus solely on their accomplishments and never mention the responsibilities they handled on a daily basis.

The folks who focus on the day-to-day responsibilities usually overlook their best qualifications and assume employers are looking for drones. This is usually the case when the candidate has been working for an overbearing, micro-managing boss.

Candidates who focus exclusively on their accomplishments, and leave off their regular responsibilities, generally think employers are looking for heroes who can fix huge problems.

More often than not, employers are actually looking for applicants who can do the day-to-day tasks with little or no supervision AND can help to reduce the problems they face. This reduction can be in the number of occurrences, or in the size of the problem when it does occur.

To increase the likelihood that you'll get an interview, include both responsibilities and accomplishments in your resume:

1. DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES. What needs to get done weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly? These activities show that you have the requirements to do the job function, and work in the industry. Just because they're easy for you to do, doesn't make those skills less valuable to other employers. You can set a value on these activities by thinking about who would complain about the work not getting done - customers, executives, co-workers?

2. YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. What are you really good at? Have you ever proposed an idea to management that was implemented? Mention the results in your resume. Did you ever save the day after someone or something blew up? Being a hero is great, and it makes for a great story during the interview.
