When you are working as a project manager, there are many skills you will need in order to be successful in your career. While there are many things you can learn from project management training courses, there are some aspects of the job that simply come as an expectation to your employer.

As with many professions, when you work in the project management industry, a good standard of personal presentation is seen as an important part of your role. Although the image you present is not the most important part of your job role, it is still important in many ways.

Here are just some of the reasons why personal presentation is important as a project manager:

Leading the Way

Being a project manager is about more than being efficient and producing meticulous project management frameworks. As the project manager, you are the leader of the team. You are a role model to your colleagues and they will aspire to replicate your actions and behaviours. As such, it is important that you lead by example. If you do not take care of your personal presentation, then how can you expect others in the team to do so?

Representing the Company

There may be many occasions when you are representing your company. If you are meeting with stakeholders, clients or donors, you are the face of the company you work for. How you present yourself is a reflection on the company.

A shoddy appearance gives the impression that the company may lack attention to detail and is unprofessional. On the other hand, a smart appearance gives the impression of a high level of professionalism and makes potential clients believe that this is a company that takes care of the small details. You are much more likely to win business and gain the trust of clients if you are well turned out.

Improved Confidence and Self-Esteem

Improving your self-esteem and becoming more confident in your role is all part of your professional development. Project management trainingfor well-recognised qualifications such as APMP or PMP Certification can improve your skills and knowledge and this in turn will boost your self-esteem so that you will have the soft skills employers want.

However, there are other ways of improving your confidence. Dressing appropriately in the workplace and taking care of your personal presentation can significantly increase your self-esteem. This is particularly relevant when it comes to job interviews. If you haven't yet placed your first foot on the project management ladder, you must pay careful attention to all aspects of your self-presentation. If you turn up to an interview looking unsmart and give an amazing interview, whilst the candidate you are against turns up looking professional and also gives an amazing interview, the chances are your appearance is something that is going to count against you. By taking care of all aspects of your self-presentation, you simply won't give potential employers any reason to discount you as a potential candidate for a position.

To find out more about personal presentation and how this can affect your role in project management, consider enrolling on project management courses.
